Moong Dal Pakora (Moong Dal Bhajiya): A Crispy and Delicious Snack

Moong dal pakora, also known as moong dal bhajiya, is a popular Indian snack made with yellow lentils (moong dal), onions, spices, and herbs. It is a crispy and delicious snack that is perfect for any occasion.

Moong dal pakora is very easy to make and can be ready in just 30 minutes. It is a great snack to make when you have unexpected guests or when you are looking for a quick and easy snack to enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram)
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves
  • Oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Wash the moong dal and soak it in water for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  2. Drain the moong dal and add it to a blender or food processor along with the onion, green chili, ginger, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, red chili powder, salt, and pepper. Blend until you have a coarse paste.
  3. Transfer the batter to a bowl and stir in the cilantro leaves.
  4. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the pakoras from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.

Tips:

  • For a crispier pakora, add a tablespoon of cornstarch to the batter.
  • If you don't have a blender or food processor, you can mash the moong dal with a mortar and pestle.
  • If you are using fresh green chilies, remove the seeds and ribs before chopping them.
  • To make the pakoras ahead of time, fry them until golden brown but not crispy. Let them cool completely and then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When you are ready to serve, fry them again until crispy.
