Poha Chivda Recipe: A Savory Snack Mix

Poha Chivda is a savory snack mix that is popular in India. It is made with poha (flattened rice flakes), spices, dry fruits, and nuts. Poha Chivda can be eaten as a snack or as a light meal. It is also a popular dish to serve at parties and gatherings.

There are two main ways to make Poha Chivda: roasted and fried. The roasted version is healthier, while the fried version is crispier and more decadent. Both versions are easy to make at home in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients:

For the roasted version:

  • 1 cup poha (flattened rice flakes)
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup peanuts
  • 1/4 cup cashews
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup dried coconut (optional)

For the fried version:

  • 1 cup poha (flattened rice flakes)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup peanuts
  • 1/4 cup cashews
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup dried coconut (optional)

Instructions:

For the roasted version:

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds and cook until they splutter.
  3. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt and cook for a few seconds.
  4. Add the poha and mix well.
  5. Roast the poha for 2-3 minutes, or until it is crispy.
  6. Remove the pan from the heat and add the peanuts, cashews, raisins, and dried coconut (if using).
  7. Mix well and serve.

For the fried version:

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds and cook until they splutter.
  3. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt and cook for a few seconds.
  4. Add the poha and mix well.
  5. Fry the poha for 2-3 minutes, or until it is golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the pan from the heat and add the peanuts, cashews, raisins, and dried coconut (if using).
  7. Mix well and serve.

Tips:

  • For a spicier Poha Chivda, add more red chili powder.
  • For a sweeter Poha Chivda, add more raisins or jaggery.
  • You can also add other ingredients to your Poha Chivda, such as chopped onions, tomatoes, or coriander leaves.
  • Poha Chivda can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
